The trailer for Edge of Tomorrow (formerly titled All You Need is Kill, or, as you might know it, “that movie where Tom Cruise is an exoskeleton but it’s not Elysium”) is here, and wow, is it a doozy. While we were fully prepared to mock the thing (come on, Cruise doing his “air-chopping” run in an exoskeleton is pretty funny), the trailer actually looks pretty solid, and feels a little like the kind of film James Cameron would have made in between Aliens and The Abyss (it even has Cameron alum Bill Paxton!).
In the high-concept trailer, Tom Cruise plays a soldier armed with an exoskeleton who fights in a battle against an alien horde. However, he dies early in the battle. He then wakes up the day of the battle, and starts his day all over again. A lot of people are throwing around Groundhog Day references in relation to the film, which, yeah, is pretty accurate. Still, it looks promising:
Dig the plot synopsis:
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.
But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
Edge of Tomorrow is set for a June 6, 2014 release date.
