Well, it’s finally here: the first trailer for Gareth Edwards’ reboot of the Godzilla franchise has arrived, giving us our first real look at the film (outside of some oblique viral videos and images) and the big lizard the size of a building that shoots heat from its mouth. And you know what? Surprisingly, it’s pretty good.
Honestly, we weren’t expecting much from this trailer. Despite the fact that the Toho Films original Godzilla is a classic, and the fact that this new film stars such talent as Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, and David Strathairn, it’s also a modern remake of a giant lizard film starring the eternally bland Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and could easily slip into the increasingly annoying genre of destruction porn (see also: Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness).
But the new clip, full of mysterious imagery, some haunting music (fans of 2001: A Space Odyssey my recognize a cue or two), and a semi-decent peek at Godzilla itself. Check it out:
Look, we’re not expecting a classic of high art here, but the first trailer for Godzilla has us sold on the possibility of a smart, entertaining popcorn flick. Here’s hoping we’re not let down.
