Now that the rebooted Spider-Man franchise has gotten its terribly mediocre and unnecessary origin film out of the way, one hopes that the series will finally be able to be, you know, good. So it was with some fairly high anticipation that we awaited the first trailer for the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2, despite the concern that it was overloaded with villains (remember Spider-Man 3’s overcrowding with Harry’s Goblin, Sandman, and Venom?).
Well, as it turns out, the trailer highlights four apparent villains: Harry Osborn, an ailing Norman Osborn, Electro, and very brief glimpses of the Rhino, which appears to be a mechanized war-machine. Oh, and there’s the conspiracy elements of what happened to Peter’s parents, and why OsCorp has been spying on Peter. Oh, then there’s the Peter and Gwen arc. We’re hoping this isn’t another Spider-Man 3, but it’s sure looking a bit stuffed:
Trepidation aside, the trailer does seem to capture the feeling of the Spidey comics a bit better than the last film, which is certainly an improvement, and Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone still have an endless supply of chemistry together. Will that be enough to hold the film together? We’ll find out on May 2, 2014.
What do you think of the trailer?
