When we first saw the initial trailer for Need for Speed back in late September, we were more than a little underwhelmed, as the trailer just appeared to be a mishmash of leftover ideas from the Fast and Furious franchise. Even worse, it featured Aaron Paul, a gifted character actor blessed with an eternal pass for starring as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, in a bland leading man role.
Well, we now have another trailer for the film, one that goes even deeper into the stuntwork that marks the film. And, like the last trailer, it’s pretty much a series of car-porn sequences interspersed with Paul growling some dialogue and looking ominously at things. But hey, Michael Keaton shows up now and then and enlivens things, so there’s that:
Overall, though, it’s hard not to look at Need for Speed and see it for just what it is: a video game adaptation that desperately wants a chunk of the Fast and Franchise audience. Perhaps the film will expand beyond that, but for right now, we’re not buying what the trailers have been selling.
Need for Speed is set for March 14, 2014 release date, and was directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor).
