It’s been awhile since I’ve watched a trailer and thought wow, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. There are so many trailers that give away a good chunk of their story right off the bat, leaving little to the imagination. In the first official trailer for Divergent, there is little revealed about the strange world that Beatrice (Shailene Woodley) lives in. It’s about time we got a trailer like this for one of these random young adult novels turned film.
In Divergent we follow Beatrice, a young girl who’s to be divided up into select factions that they’re bound to for the rest of their lives. She forces herself to stay put in one and hide her true power, that she is a divergent. What does that mean? We’re not entirely sure. There’s a cool shot of some weird water test in there which kind of confuses us, but fans of the book probably get it. The biggest question I have for the trailer is what exactly does it mean to be divergent? She can see something else others can’t, but the trailer doesn’t really specify what that means or why that’s a treat to her dystopian society.
Divergent is due out in theaters on March 21, 2014, which is an odd time to throw out a young adult novel turned movie. They did that earlier this year with The Host, which bombed, but hopefully that won’t be the same for Divergent. Check out the first official trailer below.
What do you think of the first trailer for Divergent?
