Very little is known about the upcoming Independence Day 2, the cleverly-titled sequel to 1996’s cheesily enjoyable hit, Independence Day. Will the film see the return of Will Smith as Captain Steven Hiller? Maybe, maybe not (there are two versions of the film’s script, one with Hiller, and one without in case Smith turns it down). Which familiar world landmarks will be destroyed? Will director Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s script find a way to organically extend and further the plot of the first film in order to tell a sequel that feels more like a natural progression of the original story rather than cashing in on the popularity of the original film (hahahahahaha)?
Well, there is one thing we do know: the film’s holiday-appropriate release date of July 3, 2015 has now been pushed back. Independence Day fans will now have to wait until July 1, 2016 in order to see the sequel, as it has been pushed back to receive a release date 20 years after the original film first premiered.
No reason for the push-back has been given, but if we had to guess, it’s to make room for Will Smith’s schedule in a bid to get the actor to stick with the franchise.
What do you think of the Independence Day 2 news?
