About a week ago, it seemed confirmed that Sam Raimi was working on a sequel to the cult classic Army of Darkness. Not an Evil Dead 4, but an Army of Darkness 2. But over the weekend, star Bruce Campbell denied these reports, saying that it was just internet rumors. Even though Campbell said recently that Sam and brother Ivan Raimi were working on a script, and Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez said something similar. Oh boy.
The latest denial comes from Shock til You Drop, where Campbell told one of the reporters that “It’s all Internet b.s. – there’s no reality whatsoever. These random comments slip out of my mouth or Sam Raimi’s mouth, next thing you know, we’re making a sequel.” Which isn’t so much a denial as just saying that the internet plays up the possibility of a follow up.
Though we’re fans of the 1993 film, and the original Evil Dead series in total, this is getting boring. Like going on a series of dates with an attractive person that promises sex but always finds some excuse to avoid it, we’d be happier if we’d hear in the near future that there’s a finished script and studio interest, or that it’s never going to happen because these rumors about a fourth (or second) film have been floating around for nearly twenty years. It’s safe to say that Army of Darkness 2 has been talked about by the principles, and it’s possible that it’s been worked on (though it’s hard to know what continuity the film would follow as the theatrical and director’s cuts have two different endings). That said, considering that reunion tour movies generally don’t go over that well (Indy 4, for instance),we hope it never happens. But at this point someone’s going to have to die for these rumors to stop floating around.
Oh, if you’ve never seen it, here’s the alternate ending to Army of Darkness:
And for comparison’s sake, here’s the theatrical ending:
Seriously, do you want Evil Dead 4/Army of Darkness 2?
