Since Peter Jackson was so kind as to unnecessarily over-expand Tolkien’s 310-page book The Hobbit into a series of three films each running from about 2 hours and 40 minutes to three hours, it makes sense that the film’s PR department would match that overreaching by laying down a thick slab of posters advertising the film—not just a theatrical one-sheet, but also seven character posters for those collectors among us who decorate their mantles with commemorative plates and decorative broadswords.
So here we have eight posters of varying quality—seriously, given these films’ overall budget of $561 million, couldn’t Jackson and co. have sprung for some better Photoshopping than this?—reintroducing to old favorites/ characters we sort of tolerate (we get it Legolas, you see really well—let’s drop the whole intense squinty thing) as well as giving us a few new fresh faces.
Overall, it’s a decent reintroduction into the Jackson’s live action world of Tolkien’s novels, both a reminder of how thrilling these films can at times be, but also how hollow and empty the Hobbit franchise has felt thus far.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is set for a December 13th release date.
What do you think of the posters?
