It’s been hard to say goodbye to Breaking Bad, but it seems that Community wants to make it easier. Not only is Jonathan Banks — who played Mike Ehrmantraut — joining Community‘s fifth season, but so is BB showrunner Vince Gilligan in an acting role.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan will be playing a smooth talking gold-digger who makes a fight between Abed (Danny Pudi) and Annie (Alison Brie) even worse. This will be Gilligan’s acting debut, so… no pressure. He will be joining Arrested Development‘s Mitch Hurwitz as the second showrunner to have a role in the fifth season, which makes us all the more excited for what’s to come from Community.
With Dan Harmon‘s return, Chevy Chase‘s exit last year and with Donald Glover leaving the show after five episodes, this should be an interesting season. NBC has struggled with their Thursday night comedy line-up for years now, and considering the shows that have already been cancelled, Community – which will be nearing the hundred episode mark by the end of this season — could actually return for a sixth (no word on a movie yet) as that would be advantageous for syndication, but it’s hard to know how the show will function with two of the seven primary cast members having left the study group. We’ve seen shows like The Office soldier on past their sell-by dates when leads have left, but we also have faith that Harmon can make this interesting. We’ll know for sure when Community returns January 2.
