Though on paper, the idea of a movie about the Lego universe sounds a bit… silly. Like a promotional tie-in gone amuck. But the first full trailer for The LEGO movie makes it look pretty amazing, so color us surprised we’re excited to see this one.

The trailer sets up the film: Chris Pratt is a regular guy who either comes to realize that he’s the chosen one, or becomes important to the revolution because he’s the right man for the job. Here there’s bad Lego builders operating, which are led by Will Ferrell‘s President Business, that have to be stopped from ruining the Lego universe. So it seems writer/directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord have made this a subversive bit of product placement. Nice. There’s also a lot of great actors doing voice work, including Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman to name just a few. Here’s that trailer:

From the Wonder Woman invisible jet joke to the price of coffee, there’s a lot of smart gags in here, and it could be as good as the director’s previous films Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street. And if it’s a hit, 2014 could be the year of Chris Pratt between this and Guardians of the Galaxy. The LEGO Movie is scheduled to hit theaters February 7, 2014.
