The Evil Dead franchise has been appearing more and more in the news throughout 2013, thanks to director Fede Alvarez’s remake of the original film, as well as his assertions that he and Evil Dead remake co-writer Rodo Sayagues would be returning to make an Evil Dead 2 sequel to their remake, as well as the fact that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell would reunite to make an Army of Darkness 2, with both Alvarez and Raimi working to eventually merge the two continuities of the franchise in a seventh film.

And while all of that may still be happening, it looks like it won’t be with Fede Alvarez or Rodo Sayagues, as Sayagues has confirmed that both he and Alvarez left the project months ago.

In an interview with Gorosito.TV (via /Film), Sayagues noted that he was “sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen.  Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved.”  He went on to add that he and Alvarez “left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things.  I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it.  But I what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project.”

This comes as something as a surprise, as Alvarez seemed dedicated to making both Evil Dead 2 and the merging of his and Raimi’s Evil Dead continuities happen.  That said, Alvarez and Syagues leaving the project doesn’t mean that it won’t happen; rather, it simply won’t happen with them at the helm.
