Though Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the long-await sequel to the 2004 comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy starring Will Ferrell, won’t even hit theaters until December 20, 2013, director Adam McKay is already mulling over theatrically releasing an alternate cut of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues with 250 different jokes than the original film.
While, McKay employed something similar (albeit smaller-scale) with Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy by releasing a straight-to-DVD alternate version of the film, this would require the far greater feat of releasing a remix of a film theatrically. Or, as McKay puts it:
We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs…I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes…I think it would be really funny to put it in theaters for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if’Airplane!’ had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘you’ve got to be fucking kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.
While, on one hand, you could argue that this is simply an attempt to sell more tickets for a film (hey, at least it’s a less odious trend than post-converting a film to 3D just to boost ticket prices), one could also argue that fans of the Anchorman film would love to see a second version of the movie.
What do you think?
