Unwilling to let something as small as the departure of it leading male actor slow it down, the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation continues to roll ever onward with its sense of ominous inevitability, willed into being as it was from a simple online Twilight fanfic to inexplicably bestselling novel to, now, a major motion picture. That’s right, just seven weeks after it was announced that Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam was to star with Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades of Grey, and just a week after he announced he was quitting, Irish actor Jamie Dornan has taken the role Christian Grey.
It’s been something of a mad scramble as director Sam Taylor-Johnson and company have tried to quickly find a replacement for the abruptly-departed Hunnam, and while bigger names like Alexander Skarsgard were bandied about, the production opted for the relatively unknown actor and model Dornan, who has previously appeared in such fare as ABC’s Once Upon a Time and Sopia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.
Of the left-field casting, producer Michael De Luca had this to say:
“I feel like everyone has an idea of what these characters look like and sound like, so to present the world with fresh faces — where no pre-conceived notions or baggage come with it — is best…It’s like casting Superman or James Bond. A fresh face is appropriate.”
