paranormal activity

After really exhausting a pretty thin premise (a ghost really likes this gal named Katie) with one fun original film followed by three sequels that barely attempt to construct a crude mythology (a family made a pact with a demon, there’s a lady-cult, something something, Katie gets possessed), all in an excuse to make the film over and over again in which people film doors getting slammed and things getting knocked off bookshelves before Katie and/or the cult show up in the final ten minutes, the Paranormal Activity franchise is awfully tired at this point.  So, instead of doing something like, say, not making any more, Paramount has changed tactics: Latino spinoff.

Hoping to gain access to a wider audience now that the PA series is starting to bring in smaller and smaller number, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is a crass bid for a new audience by taking the same structure of the other films, wiping it clean, and attempting to re-sell it to a new audience.  Cinema!

We’ll give the film points for at least trying to build upon the paper-thin mythology established in the first four films of the franchise; plus, it’s refreshing not to see yet another bland, rich Southern California family get its doors slammed for a change.  But still, most of this trailer just feels like a repackaged and condensed version of the franchise’s inferior sequels.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is set for a January 3, 2014 release.
