Of all the clever touches Shane Black brought to Iron Man 3—the surprise reveal of the Mandarin’s true nature, keeping Tony Stark separate from Iron Man for most of the film, making another great Shane Black Christmas-based action film—one of the film’s smartest strokes was also one of its most crass: finally tossing a kid into a Marvel film, thus giving the all the non 18-34 year-old audience members (i.e., kids) someone to identify with.
That kid was 12-year-old Ty Simpkins, an actor who has also starred in the Insidious films as well as Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. And now, he’ll be doing the child audience-surrogate-in-a-blockbuster thing all over again by starring Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World. Because it’s not a Jurassic Park film unless children are somehow wedged into a plot that involves wisely placing them on an island inhabited by carnivorous engines of total bloodlust and destruction, because toys. It sells lots and lots of toys. And movie tickets, lots and lots of movie tickets.
The 3D Jurassic World is currently in preproduction, and is slated for a June 12, 2015 release date.
