While it seems that the box office is almost entirely dominated by superhero films, we are likely approaching a point of Star Wars pop cultural saturation. In addition to the wildly anticipated Star Wars Episode VII (the first of an all-new sequel trilogy) as well as a slew of one-off character spin-off films, we are also getting a Star Wars TV show. That’s animated. On the Disney Channel.
Star Wars Rebels is an animated series that will launch with a one-hour premiere on the Disney Channel in the fall of 2014, and will be followed by a full season on the Disney XD network. The series will work to fill the 20-year gap between the final film of the prequel trilogy, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and the first film of the original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope.
The animated series will document the formation and rise of the Rebel Alliance, apparently personified by a teen character (this is the Disney Channel, after all). Further (and a huge draw for fans), Ralph McQuarrie’s original Star Wars concept art will apparently be used as the basis for the look of Star Wars Rebels. And now you can dig the quick teaser trailer for the upcoming series:
