Every so often, a movie star has to tackle old Hollywood standby, the Big Hollywood Life Lesson Movie About How Dreams Always Come True And Life Is An Ineffable Adventure (Even Though In The Real World It’s Mostly Paying Bills And Watching Some TV Shows And Sleeping A Lot, With A Few Good Parties Here And There), even though, most of the time, these films are both gratingly pretentious and pandering. And now, it’s Ben Stiller’s turn with The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, as he apparently didn’t learn his own lesson in these kinds of movies when his character Tugg Speedman went full retard for Simple Jack in Tropic Thunder. Oh well.
In the film (which he also directed), Stiller leads the adaptation of James Thurber’s story of a day-dreamer who develops a crush on Kristen Wiig. Reality and fantasy begin to combine, however, when Mitty is forced to go on an adventure to find a missing image for the final installment of Life magazine. So, trailer:
Look, we get why there’s an audience for this—it’s a big, loud, hopeful movie about hope and love and all of the escapist fare that movies can throw at us to allow us to leave our lives and go on two-hour Mitty-esque adventures. Still, at least by this trailer’s metric, this is pretty heavy-handed stuff.
Co-starring Kathryn Hahn, Adam Scott, Sean Penn, and Patton Oswalt, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is set for a December 25 release date.
