Comic-Con attendees have often received the first peek at prestige projects and mega-franchises, and the teaser trailer for the upcoming reboot of Godzilla is no exception. As Coming Soon notes, Warner Bros. brought the teaser to the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con for fans to see, and they brought it back this year for the Con as well. And now, they’ve finally “leaked” the trailer on YouTube under a fake name and fake title.
The teaser is practically drenched in atomic energy references and Toho films mythology: the trailer (which is called “Fatman trailer” in a reference to Fat Man, the codename for the atomic bomb dropped over Nagasaki in 1945) was uploaded by “Akira Watanabe,” a reference to the special effects wiz who often worked for Toho, the studio that released the original Godzilla films.
As for the actual trailer, it’s a lot of footage of a burned and broken city, with an audio recording of Robert Oppenheimer recounting the day he and other scientists saw the first atomic weapon detonated. Ominous stuff:
Godzilla is set for a May 16, 2014 release date. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and Elizabeth Olsen.
What do you think of the teaser?
