One of the big questions still remaining regarding Ultron, the big bad of The Avengers: Age of Ultron is exactly how James Spader will portray the angry robotic villain. Will he simply be providing a eerie, sinister voice? Offer up a motion-capture performance of some sort? Or stuff himself into a rickety metal suit?
A recent spate of interviews seems to indicate that Spader will provide at least some sort of motion-capture in addition to a vocal, as the actor noted that “just this weekend I went in for them to take very extensive photographs, head scans, body scans, and all kinds of things in preparation for figuring out how the hell I’m gonna fit in this Ultron character!”
It’s not entirely clear if Spader is referring to an actual suit (which is kind of doubtful, as the actor is not known for an imposing physique) or some form of motion capture (far more likely).
Elsewhere, Spader noted how his love of comics as a child, and children of his own, helped spur his choice to take the role:
I think it’ll be a lot of fun and it’s incredibly nostalgic for me. When I was a kid my best friend had trunks of comics and I didn’t have any so I used to love going for sleepovers at his house. Also I have three sons and two of them have a great interest in comics so they’re excited I’m playing the role.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for a May 1, 2015 release date.
