Recent production difficulties on The Good Dinosaur has caused Disney to shuffle their release schedule around. Dinosaur, which was to be Pixar’s next film, won’t be ready next year as was originally announced. Instead it’s moving into 2015, while this has caused some other release date shuffles.
The Angelina Jolie-starring Maleficent has moved up from July 2 to May 30, 2014, while The Good Dinosaur has moved back from May 30, 2014, to Nov. 25, 2015, and that move bumped Finding Dory (the Finding Nemo sequel) to June 17, 2016. This also means that 2014 will be the first time there hasn’t been a new Pixar movie in a year since 2005, and could make (if no other dates change) 2015 the first time Pixar releases two films in one year as Inside Out is dated for June 19.
This is probably for the best as recently The Good Dinosaur removed one of its directors, Bob Peterson, and it sounds like the film is still taking shape. The Pixar machine — which for a while had a pretty spotless record — has been gummed up a bit by sequels and spin-offs, and the last couple movies have made it seem like the company lost a little edge. That made The Good Dinosaur sound appealing as it was an original idea, but it’s likely they need to do some more tooling in this story about a boy and his pet dinosaur. We’ll know if they cracked it two years from now.
Do you think Pixar is still the best, or do you think there’s been a drop in quality?
