Because the cast of the upcoming The Expendables 3 isn’t bursting at the seams quite enough with a roster of disparate actors (so far: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell), news has now broken that Kelsey Grammer (Cheers, Frasier, X-Men: The Last Stand) has now joined the cast.
The deep-voiced actor, known mainly for playing brooding or pretentious intellectuals, will be playing a mercenary character who was originally slated to be portrayed by Nicolas Cage. It’s a somewhat surprising bit of casting as, excellent actor though he may be, Grammer isn’t exactly in the same caliber of outright insanity of Nicolas Cage. So go ahead and assume the character will be toned down somewhat.
As for The Expendables 3 plot—as we’ve previously reported, it’ll go down like this: Mel Gibson will play a Big Bad named Conrad Stonebanks. Stonebanks was the co-founding member of the Expendables with Stallone’s Barney Ross, but graduated into ruthless gun-running and Barney had to kill him. Except somehow Stonebanks survived and, years later, decides it’s time to kill the members of the Expendables. Thus, Barney recruits a lot of young guns to join forces with the older members of the Expendables, lots of jokes about being old will happen, and everyone will shoot at each other.
The Expendables 3 is set for an August 15, 2014 release date.
