If the plot featured in the Grudge Match trailer seems a trifle familiar (a Sylvester Stallone-starring film about aging boxers who get the opportunity to prove themselves to modern audiences because of a boxing simulation video that goes viral and piques the public’s interest), well, perhaps you’ve heard of a 2006 film called Rocky Balboa: a Sylvester Stallone-starring film about an gaining boxer who gets the opportunity to prove himself to modern audiences because of a boxing simulation video that goes viral and piques the public’s interest. The only significant difference here appears to be that Robert De Niro costars in Grudge Match.
So, yeah, we get it, the film is being pitched as “two of cinema’s greatest boxers!” (Rocky Balboa and Jake LaMotta) confronting each other in the ring. Honestly, though, the film just looks like another Stallone movie that jokes about aging, and another De Niro film in which he just shows up for a paycheck and naps on film for two hours. Check out the trailer:
The ad is not without its charm, and Stallone nostalgia keeps pulling us back into his orbit, but still: this feels like yet another entry into Stallone’s increasingly numerous “we’re not quite too old for this sh**” genre that already has Rocky Balboa, Rambo, The Expendables, The Expendables 2, Bullet to the Head, and Escape Plan.
Grudge Match is set for a December 25, 2013 release date.
