Like any decent studio, Columbia Pictures just wants to take someone else’s successful idea and run with it. Just as Warner Bros. watched Marvel build an entire cinematic universe of superhero films bound together with the narrative spine of The Avengers franchise and then decided they needed to do the same with The Justice League, so too has Columbia longed to take their one major superhero property, The Amazing Spider-Man, and get on the mega-franchise fun.
Thus, rumors have been building for some time that Columbia would in fact use The Amazing Spider-Man property to build towards an anti-Avengers or anti-Justice League, and actually focus on a super-villain group: The Sinister Six, a comic book team that has, over time, featured Electro (currently a villain in Amazing Spider-Man 2), Rhino (ditto ditto), Green Goblin (ditto ditto ditto), Vulture (rumored to be ditto ditto ditto ditto), Doctor Octopus, Kraven, Mysterio, Sandman, and more. And now they appear to be more than just rumor: Jamie Foxx has confirmed in an interview with Total Film that Columbia is indeed considering the Sinister Six (as well as hinting at Electro’s future):
“Yes, they actually talked about it, the Sinister Six…So, fingers crossed, because when you think about it, electricity never dies, it just goes to a different place.”
So hey, maybe the Amazing Spider-Man franchise finally has something exciting to offer fans (come on—that first film was terrible).
What do you think of the news?
