Look, not all remakes are terrible—we acknowledge that. The Magnificent Seven, The Thing, The Fly, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Ocean’s 11, etc., are all remakes that we can enjoy. I just want to establish that our reaction to the RoboCop remake trailer isn’t some kneejerk anti-remake reaction; rather, it’s simply the total revulsion that comes from watching a really awful trailer.
Directed by Jose Padilha, and starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Abbie Cornish, RoboCop’s basic plot is laid out in the trailer—cop gets killed, evil corporation joins his face and consciousness to a cybernetic body to promote their newly designed form of law enforcement… but wait! The indomitability of the human spirit is just too much for the system to control! Eventually the humanity of the officer is able to override the cold machinery of his new design! Thus, a series of Screenwriting 101 clichés ensue, in which blah blah blah conformity and control will never be able to cage the human spirit blah blah blah. Just watch and get it over with.
Also, the new suit just make RoboCop look like a cheap knock-off Power Ranger. But hey, I’ll admit, Keaton’s scenes are amusing, so there’s that.
RoboCop is set for a February 7, 2014 release date.
What do you think of the trailer?
