One of the more frustratingly, well, stupid, casting rumors in recent memory is the internet-generated “news” that Bryan Cranston would be cast as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel because, hey, he’s that really bald and really mean guy one that one show on TV, and so he should probably go ahead and play the most really bald and really mean guy from the Superman comics, right?
Well, no, because again, that’s kind of reductive and, well, stupid. Sure, Bryan Cranston looks cool bald, and sure, he’s an incredibly gifted performer with a knack for playing a morally vacuous and selfish man addicted to power (and sure, we’ll report about him talking about it, too). But assuming Cranston will play Lex Luthor because he’s bald on TV is just a little silly. And Cranston seems to agree, especially concerning the rumor that he’s receiving a six-film deal to play the Superman Big Bad:
“Six? This is all news to me… I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”
The Man of Steel sequel is currently scheduled to premiere on July 17, 2015.
What do you think of the casting “news”?
