How does one up the badass quotient of the Fast and Furious franchise after adding Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Fast Five, and Jason Statham in Fast and Furious 6? It seems Fast and Furious 7 has found the answer: Kurt Russell.
Variety is reporting that Russell is in negotiations to join the film, which would be quite a coup for the franchise. Granted, this may mean more to fans of his work with John Carpenter in such films as The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China, but Russell is a credible tough guy who could play either hero or villain in the new film with equal appeal.
They don’t mention what part he’d be playing, but they do mention that his role was originally offered to Denzel Washington, which makes for a strange substitution. When Kevin Costner dropped out of Django Unchained and was replaced by Kurt Russell, that made sense. Wyatt Earp was replaced by Wyatt Earp — even though neither ended up appearing in the finished film — though we’re guessing Russell’s role here is colorblind (and we’d guess that Washington’s asking price was too high).
Russell joins Rhonda Rousey, Tony Jaa and Statham (who simply cameoed in part six) as the new additions to the cast, while Vin Diesel, etc. are all expected to return. This is exciting news, and now we can’t wait for Fast and Furious 7, which is scheduled to hit theaters July 11, 2014.
Who would you like to see join this franchise?
