Oh, the blockbuster movie casting rumor: simultaneously one of the least reliable and yet most-read news bits in the entertainment world, reportage from a time in a film’s development in which nearly anything is possible, so a bunch of outlets just throw names out into the ether to see what sticks. Today’s film? The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The character? Scarlet Witch? The performer? Elizabeth Olsen.
Much was made when Joss Whedon stated that Saoirse Ronan was his model for Scarlet Witch; however, the latest hubbub is that Ronan moved on from the project. Enter the casting rumors for Elizabeth Olsen, who proved herself in Martha Marcy May Marlene to be an incredibly gifted and nuanced actress. So, she could probably play a European mutant who has the ability to “manipulate probability” and wear spandex.
That said, this is all conjecture, and even if the rumors are true, there’s no guarantee that Olsen would be willing to take on the role (though she is starring in the upcoming Godzilla, which means she isn’t blockbuster-averse; and she has a role in Oldboy, which means she has no problem with comic adaptations [or, excuse me, manga adaptations]). That said, if true, she’d likely be a welcome addition to the cast.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for a May 1, 2015 release date.
What do you think of the rumor?
