On last night’s Under The Dome, a mysterious new woman appeared in Chester’s Mill, ready to change the way Big Jim’s been running things. “The Fourth Hand” also featured a new discovery, in which Joe, Norrie and Angie learn that the mini-dome they found doesn’t want to be seen by anyone who isn’t chosen.

The Players:

  • Director: Roxann Dawson
  • Writer:  Daniel Truly
  • Cast: Mike Vogel, Aisha Hinds, Dean Norris, Colin Ford, Rachelle Lefevre, Natalie Martinez, Britt Robertson, Alexander Koch and Nicholas Strong

Episode Title: “The Fourth Hand”

Big Jim and Barbie discover that their lives are more connected than they thought when a woman called Maxine (Natalie Zea), appears in Chester’s Mill. Meanwhile, Angie has a seizure, and Joe and Norrie make a discovery in Joe’s barn.

The Good:

  • Egg Hunt: Joe, Norrie and Julia go looking for the egg, but come home empty handed. It turns out that Joe, while sleepwalking, went to get the mini-dome from the woods, and placed it inside his barn, where he, Norrie and Angie later found it. Their theory is that the egg doesn’t want to be seen by anyone except those who are chosen. That mean those who’ve had the “pink stars” seizure – Joe, Norrie, and now, Angie. The three test out their theory by placing their hands on the dome, making it light up an electric blue. Norrie makes the assumption that their hands are acting as a key of some sort. She might be right about that, except that their circle isn’t complete. The mini-dome shows them that they’re one hand short. And now, the hunt for the fourth hand begins (Pretty cool, huh?).
  • Lovebirds: Julia and Barbie are adorable together. They’ve found solace and peace in each other, and it’s very special. Their relationship is definitely going to be tested, especially now with this new mystery woman on the prowl. We’re only grateful that we’re actually invested in these two characters and their relationship to care what happens to them. That’s a huge plus for the show.

The So-So:

  • Mystery Woman: Alright, so let’s talk about Maxine, who somehow has dirt on both Barbie and Big Jim. It looks like she was the one behind the propane deal that happened before the dome came down since we see her paying cash to Chief Duke Perkins on-camera. It also looks like she knows that Barbie killed Julia’s husband because he called her “frantic” after doing the bad deed. We’ve talked about the possibility of new characters on this show, and how that would be tricky since Chester’s Mill is set in a contained space. According to Maxine, she spent the last eight or so days hiding inside an empty house, waiting to see if there was a solution to the dome. When she realized the dome wasn’t going away, she came out to play. Sure, we can buy that she was hiding, perhaps plotting a plan for this brave new world, but some things don’t add up. She knows way too much. She admits to only knowing Barbie for a few months, but seems to know everything about him. How could that be when one of Barbie’s main characteristics is that he’s secretive? So far, we’re not liking her, but that’s fine because villains aren’t meant to be liked. We’ll admit, we’re intrigued by her and her wickedness. However, we want a better explanation for her sudden appearance.

Overall:

In “The Fourth Hand” the writers took a huge risk by introducing a new character. Unlike the previous newbies, Maxine seems like she’s here to stay. She’s already causing a bunch of trouble for our two main men – Barbie and Big Jim. Her unexpected appearance is a bit confusing, but she’ll be adding a fresh spin to this show. Meanwhile, we’re excited to see who the fourth hand might be. Let the hunt begin!
