After all the hubbub concerning Bruce Willis not being willing to sleepwalk his way through his The Expendables 3 cameo for anything less than $4 million, we finally have a full cast roster and plot summery for the third film in the aging-action-stars-punch-each-other franchise. And, if the film is directed by Patrick Hughes with a willingness to laugh at itself, the ridiculously hammy ‘80s-style action plot could be pretty entertaining.
First off, the cast (and it’s pretty great): Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell. Whew.
And how, exactly, will all these folks be sharing screentime? It’s going to go down like this: Mel Gibson will play a Big Bad named Conrad Stonebanks. Stonebanks was the co-founding member of the Expendables with Stallone’s Barney Ross, but graduated into ruthless gun-running and Barney had to kill him. Except somehow Stonebanks survived and, years later, decides it’s time to kill the members of the Expendables. Thus, Barney recruits a lot of young guns to join forces with the older members of the Expendables, lots of jokes about being old will happen, and everyone will shoot at each other.
The Expendables 3 is set for an August 15, 2014 release date.
