Orange is the New Black, the Netflix original prison dramedy created by Jenji Kohan (Weeds) and based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, will be losing a crucial cast member in its second season. It’s now being reported that Laura Prepon will be bailing on the series in the middle of season two.
Warning: Some spoilers ahead…
In the series, Taylor Schilling plays Piper Chapman, a woman imprisoned for carrying drug money for her girlfriend Alex Vause, who is portrayed by Prepon. Vause is also in the same prison after being busted running drugs for an international drug cartel. By the end of Orange is the New Black’s critically-lauded first season (which also managed to score more viewers than Arrested Development’s fourth season or House of Cards, two other Netflix original series), Alex and Piper had split.
And while there has been no reason given for Prepon’s abrupt exit, Netflix issued a hasty statement noting that Prepon’s storyline will be wrapped up at some point in season two, with an option for her to return. “Our season is still developing and nothing is confirmed.” The second season of the show was green-lit in June, weeks before the first season had even premiered on the streaming-content giant.
