Earlier this week, we reported to you that of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two characters that Vin Diesel was possibly in the running to play—could it be Ant-Man/ Hank Pym? Or perhaps Vision, as we suspected last year? Or maybe even the mega-villain Thanos?—it was most likely that he’d be voicing a walking, talking CGI tree named Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. And in a recent interview with The L.A. Times, the actor has confirmed he’ll be taking on the role.
In response to the very straight-up line of questioning from the L.A. Times (“Why Groot?”), Diesel has this to say:
I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.
So there you have it, gang—inspiring. Well, playing a sentient alien plant probably won’t be boring, at least.
Then it was time to discuss himself in pretentious and third-person terms as it came time to discuss why he was offered this particular role as opposed to others, and when he would find time to voice the character:
That’s the thing — I’m so busy. The audience wanted Vin and Marvel, Vin and Marvel. But I’m too busy to do a six-month role. So what Marvel came up with was really interesting. … I am watching a social wave influence and in some ways guide their thinking.
Guardians of the Galaxy—in which you will be able to see Vin and Marvel, Vin and Marvel on the big screen—is set for an August 1, 2014 release.
