Not all Star Trek fans may be happy to hear this, but it looks like the creative team behind the latest two movies (Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman) will be back to pen the third film, whether people like it or not. There’s a particularly interesting relationship fans have with these two, mainly due to the fact that they’ve produced a nice mix of hits and misses with their written work that’s been transformed into these monstrous blockbuster movies.
In some ways this news come off as a bit of a surprise. For a good while there were talks that they would bring in another writer to fill in the void that Kurtzman and Orci would create due to their ever-busy schedule. In some way, shape or form they managed to make it work. Fingers crossed that this script doesn’t turn into a rushed job.
There were a lot of complaints about the direction Star Trek Into Darkness took as it blatantly ripped off aspects of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. We secretly hope that they won’t be going that route again for the sequel. Actually, we would much prefer it if Kirk (Chris Pine) would not devolve into the version of the character that’s introduced in the Star Trek reboot, much in the same way they presented him once again in Star Trek Into Darkness. Yes we know that the hero’s journey is a formulaic story that has worked time and time again, but there’s no way we’ll ever be able to go anywhere with this interpretation of the Star Trek universe if they keep dumbing down some of these characters at the start of each film, as if the one released prior to never happened.
What we hope that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman do with the third installment is that they really get creative, go out there and maybe create a new story, world and character while giving the occasional nod to a beloved species, planet or two that we remember from the original series. Surely that’s not asking too much.
Are you excited to see this duo writing another Star Trek movie? Why or why not?
