Now that we know that the long-fabled Superman Vs. Batman film is indeed happening in the form of a sequel to Man of Steel, the inevitable rumor-mongering has begun: just who will be playing the newest incarnation of the Batman? In the past 30 years alone we’ve had only four live action Batman actors: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale. And now, rumors have begun to bubble upward about Batman Number Five.
According to Batman on Film (via /Film), Warner Bros. is skewing older, searching for an actor to play Bruce Wayne/Batman that is in his mid-40s. This seems in keeping with the news that Zack Snyder will be using Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns as an inspiration, as Bruce Wayne was definitely on the other side of middle age in that graphic novel.
Further, Batman on Film is noting that Wayne will be portrayed as “a grizzled veteran who has been on the job for several years” as Batman. Perhaps this new Batman will be unimpressed, or even enraged, by the carnage Superman allowed at the end of Man of Steel. Unofficially, the names currently in the running appear to be Jon Hamm (though his name almost always comes up), Josh Brolin, and (sigh) Gerard Butler. Please, WB, anyone but Butler.
Keep in mind, it’s all conjecture at this point.
