Look, at this point, I think it’s safe to admit that the summer of 2013, at least in terms of big movies, was at least so-so, if not an outright dud. Which is one of the reasons why we’re so banking on (and hoping that) Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9, Elysium, will be one true satisfying hit of the summer. It looks great, has a smart premise, great-looking action, excellent actors, solid effects work, and hey, it’s probably the closest we cult film fans will ever get to the Escape From Earth film that John Carpenter used to talk about. If this movie blows, then the summer of 2013 was pretty much a bust, Iron Man 3 aside.
Which is probably why the PR machine for the film is ramping up into high gear, giving us yet another extended trailer for the film (you can check out the first extended trailer here), giving us the film’s premise once again: a future dystopia, poor people live on Earth and rich folks in an orbiting space station called Elysium, Matt Damon’s an ex-con trying to be good when he gets poisoned with radiation and has five days to invade Elysium and get the cure before he dies. Oh, and he’s given a badass exoskeleton to help get the job done. Badass enough for you?
Elysium, the last great hope for the summer, is set for an August 19th release date.
What do you think of the trailer?
