Going into the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, most assumed that when it came down to Marvel Studios vs. Warner Bros./ DC Comics, Marvel was going to steal the show with new information about The Avengers sequel as well as Guardians of the Galaxy. So, imagine everyone’s surprise when Warner Bros. drops a bomb and announces that the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel will involve a conflict between Superman and a rebooted Batman.
While not much else about the film is known, director Zack Snyder has said the film will take some inspiration from Frank Miller’s seminal graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns. Further, Man of Steel screenwriter (and the guy who will pen the new film as well) David Goyer had this to say about the upcoming film—and it’s potential titles:
So over in Hall H at the Warner Bros., I guess most people know now, at the end of the Warner Bros. panel Zack came out and he brought Harry Lennix, who plays General Swanwick in Man of Steel and we –- actually, Harry read a bit from [The Dark Knight Returns] and so the next film we’re making, we’re already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015. We’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, it’s –- that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that’s happening.
Also, as /Film notes, Warner Bros. now owns the domain names for BatmanVsSuperman.com, SupermanVsBatman.com, and BatmanVsSupermanmovie.com, but don’t have SupermanVsBatmanmovie.com. So… does this indicated a Warner Bros. preference for Batman Vs. Superman? Possibly. But seriously—millions and millions of dollars, big stars, the two biggest franchises in Warner Bros. history—WB couldn’t do better than a “Vs.” type title?
What do you think of the Batman Vs. Superman news?
