Even though it’s been reported time and time again that a Dredd (feature-length) sequel is out of the question, Karl Urban continues to keep hope alive for fans of the 2012 sci-fi action flick. After the poor box office figures for the movie, the chances of a sequel went from slim to none. But then the movie became somewhat of home video hit and since the sequel talks have started going again. While promoting Riddick at Comic-Con 2013, the actor said that fans could make Dredd 2 a reality.
Urban mentioned that a sequel will probably only happen if fans ask for it, and by ask he meant fiercely remind Lionsgate that they want a sequel via email, Facebook, Twitter and any other kind of social media.
“I think the more people that campaign for it, the more people that email, Twitter and write into Lionsgate and say ‘we want to see more of this’, then the more likelihood that we’ll get to see that… we certainly are doing everything we can to ensure that happens”.
Being the star of the movie and all, Urban is very supportive of making more Dredd films. He mentioned that “the home video sales went through the roof,” probably selling 650,000 units in the first week. What he’s referring to is the spike in Blu-Ray/DVD sales in June. The Dredd Blu-ray occupied the top spot on Amazon.co.uk and jumped from 260th to 30th position on Amazon.com.
Well, you know what they say, amazing things can happen when people unite (so if you’re a fan, campaign for a sequel). At the end of the day, it’s all about money, and Lionsgate will only make a sequel if they see there’s money in it for them. That’s the sad reality.
Karl Urban will next appear in Riddick, which opens in theaters September 6.
What do you think? Can fans make a sequel happen?
