Guillermo del Toro is currently doing the press rounds in promotion of his new giant robots vs. giant monsters film, Pacific Rim. And with the cavalcade of questions concerning Pacific Rim comes discussion of his other upcoming projects, including Dark Universe—or, as it’s more colloquially known, Justice League Dark.
Dark Universe is exactly what it sounds like—a dark version of the Justice League, featuring a handful of DC comics oddballs and monsters like Swamp Thing, Deadman, Phantom Stranger, and John Constantine. Del Toro is currently writing an outline for the project and, according to /Film, is waiting for the “ideal” screenwriter to flesh it out.
The great thing about the Dark Universe is you have this possibility of basically creating a supernatural group and you can play by different rules, but I would love to see the DC Universe become as cohesive as the Marvel filmic universe. So if there’s any correlation, I will honor it.
Of course, nothing is yet set in stone, and it seems like Warner Bros. and DC Comics are still trying to figure out the plot of Man of Steel 2, the Justice League film, so take del Toro’s comments with a grain of salt. Still, it would be kind of wild to see Swamp Thing grabbing a drink with Superman, no?
