Just when you thought you could get excited about the fifth season of Community—despite Chevy Chase’s awkward exit as a cast member, Community creator and former showrunner Dan Harmon announced his return after being fired before the misguided fourth season—more bad news has emerged from the once-great TV comedy. What’s the damage this time? It appears that Donald Glover has one foot out the door, and will likely appear in less than half of the upcoming fifth season.
That’s right, Donald Glover—who’s spent the past four seasons playing the lovable, and frequently tearful, nerd and former jock, Troy Barnes—is rumored to be on his way on Community, due to his desire to focus more on his rap career under the name Childish Gambino. As such, rather than a full-on return for the fifth season of Community, The AV Club reports that Glover will appear in five of the season’s 13 episodes.
So what does this mean? Well, Community now has yet another awkward character absence to try and write around (as they did for Chase during the back half of season four) , Harmon has another obstacle to get over (after having to write past all of season four’s missteps), and the audience has another reason to become increasingly disappointed in this once great comedy.
What do you think of the Community news?
