The newest trailer for Only God Forgives has now arrived, tailored for an international audience. The film, Nicolas Winding Refn’s follow-up to the successful 2011 flick, Drive (also starring Ryan Gosling), received decidedly mixed reviews upon premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this year (about half the reviews accused the film of being a thin, turgid, and pretentious mess, while the other half found it a worthy successor to Drive’s weird blend of art-house and genre film making). The international trailer, however, is armed with a handful of glowing reviews and a pulsing Suuns soundtrack.
The trailer lays out much of the story (and the footage) that we’ve seen before: Gosling plays another relatively mute guy who stars at things a lot. He also happens to run a Thai boxing club in Bangkok that also acts a front for a his family’s illegal drug distribution network; however, things hit a snag when it appears that The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer, kills Gosling’s younger brother. Enter Kristin Scott Thomas, Gosling’s Oedipal nightmare of a mother, who demands Gosling enact murderous retribution for his brother.
Again, most of the above happens while Gosling just stares blankly at things, but hey, at least half of the reviews are good—it could be fun. Find out for yourself when Only God Forgives opens on July 19th.
