Lovelace

Though there’s now been a couple movies made about porn stars (most notably Boogie Nights and Wonderland), those have mostly focused on John Holmes. He was famous for two things, and one was being involved with murder. But the nice thing about Lovelace is that it focuses on a female star, one who was really put through the ringer by the industry. Amanda Seyfried stars as Deep Throat‘s Linda Lovelace in this biopic, and now there’s a trailer.

It seems that the film is focusing on the Star 80-esque relationship between Lovelace and her manager/husband/pimp Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard), who was both emotionally and physically abusive to the actress, especially after her career took off when Deep Throat became the porno of the 1970′s. The film also stars Hank Azaria, Adam Brody, Bobby Cannavale, James Franco, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Chloe Sevigny, Sharon Stone, and Juno Temple.

Seyfried is more attractive than Lovelace, though she does capture her “willing to do anything” attitude — at least for the first part of the trailer, which seems to hint at the loop Lovelace co-starred in with a dog. Her attractiveness may seem like a weird thing to focus on, but the appeal of Deep Throat wasn’t that Lovelace was exceptionally pretty (her talents  lay elsewhere), it was more about the shock factor. Though the movie may be great, if you have any interest in Lovelace’s life, Joe Bob Briggs wrote an outstanding essay about the film and Lovelace in his must-read book Profoundly Disturbing. Lovelace hits screens August 9, and likely VOD either shortly before or after.

Is there any chance this could be better than Boogie Nights?
