Laika is the little studio that could as they’ve made a niche for themselves as the premiere studio for stop motion animation that focuses on lightly macabre stories that still manage to be kid-friendly. There’s an obvious through line from Coraline (their breakthrough hit), Paranorman and now The BoxTrolls, which has just released a first teaser trailer.
This first teaser doesn’t offer much actual footage but it sets up the idea of an unnatural and possibly supernatural family of Box Trolls that are taking care of a young human child. Though not featured in the trailer, the voice cast includes Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette and more, while the film is based on the children’s book Here Be Monsters! by Alan Snow. Here’s that teaser of a trailer.
What’s interesting about the timing of this (especially with the film not scheduled to hit theaters until September 26, 2014), is that it comes on the heels of the Supreme Court decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, and it addresses different kinds of parenting and families. Whether they just wanted to get a teaser out there and it’s awkward timing, or if this film is trying to court more liberal-minded parents is unknown. How could it be, we don’t get the movie until the fall of 2014. Still, it’s a nice trailer.
