Will Smith will not be welcoming any aliens in the Independence Day sequel. According to director Roland Emmerich, the Prince is just too expensive for their little old blockbuster. But this news doesn’t change a thing: as confirmed last week, 20th Century Fox still plans to release the movie in the summer of 2015.

Emmerich is currently doing publicity for his upcoming action movie White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and someone at New York Daily News (via /Film) asked him the inevitable question as to whether Mr. Smith would be returning for the second Independence Day movie. Emmerich revealed the following:

“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. We have maybe half the people that you know from the first movie, and the other half people who are new.”

A lot has changed since the first movie came out. Smith wasn’t as famous or as into himself then as he is now (let’s recall the reason why he didn’t play Django in Django Unchained). While some fans may indeed be bummed out that Big Willie won’t return, let’s look on the bright side – Emmerich will now have a little more money to spend on CGI and explosions and stuff.

The director has been very open about the plots of the sequels, saying that Independence Day 2 take place 20 years after the events in the first movie, when alien reinforcements finally arrive to attack Earth. However, the humans aren’t completely unprepared this time. They’ve developed new technology, but somehow it still won’t be good enough to kill the aliens (until the second sequel, of course).

Independence Day 2 hits theaters July 3rd 2015.

What do you think? Are you bummed Will Smith won’t return for the sequel?
