Last week, we reported to you that Shailene Woodley, who had filmed a few brief scenes as Mary Jane Watson for the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2, had been cut from the film, with Mary Jane slated to now appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. With that news came reports that Woodley would be axed altogether, and that Sony would be hiring an altogether new actress to take on the role in the third film in the franchise. Then came news that Canadian actress Sarah Gadon had signed on to join the franchise, and many—including us—began to wonder if Gadon would jumping into the role of Peter Parker’s flame-haired girlfriend.
However, a recent report from The Wrap (via Cinema Blend) notes otherwise. They claim that Gadon is indeed “100% confirmed that Gadon will be appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but she will not be playing Mary Jane Watson—as Mary Jane “will NOT appear until Part THREE” of the franchise.
If the report is accurate, this leaves even more questions, as Gadon is now part of an increasingly enormous cast already rumored to contain Black Cat, Vulture, and Green Goblin, along with the confirmed Electro and Rhino. Could Gadon be playing Betty Brant, the Daily Bugle secretary, as Cinema Blend suggests? We’ll find out when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
