Earlier this week, we reported to you that there had been a shake-up in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cast—while the villain roster continues to balloon from Electro to Rhino to a pre-Green Goblin to a rumored Vulture and Black Cat, it was reported that the film would be dropping the character of Mary Jane Watson, as played by Shailene Woodley, from the film, and would save her for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4. Further reports noted that Woodley may be dropped entirely and recast by the time 3 comes around.
All of which makes the most recent Spider-Man casting news all the more interesting—actress Sarah Gadon has just been cast to “join the Spider-Man franchise,” with no specific mention of which role or in which film she will appear. However, coming so fast on the news of Woodley’s exit, many are taking this most recent bit of casting news as an indicator that Gadon will be stepping up as Mary Jane.
Reportedly—and this has not been officially confirmed—Woodley’s scheduling conflicts, coupled with tepid fan reaction to her casting, are what pushed Sony to recast the role with Gadon. Again, none of this is officially confirmed—all we know is that Gadon is now a part of the Spider-Man cinematic universe.
What do you think of the Spider-Man news?
