Well, the trailer for Jobs—formerly titled jOBS (isn’t cute and clever?)—is finally here, and with it we are able to see Ashton Kutcher’s remarkable transformation into Apple founder Steve Jobs. And by remarkable, I mean that he has a beard. That’s pretty much it.
The trailer plays like a sappy and saccharine version of The Social Network, but without any of the flair, audacity, or verbal wit, with Kutcher basically being Kutcher but with a beard and, occasionally, glasses. The trailer for Jobs finds the film hitting all the basic biopic beats with slathering its subject in laudatory titles (apparently, Jobs was the very first rebel, visionary, and innovator in human history). More than anything else, it looks like the kind of film that exists to do two things—give its star a vehicle to show the world what a serious thespian he is, and satisfy our need to create a biopic for literally every famous person who ever existed.
In the end, the film looks pretty light and harmless—one would think someone of Jobs’ stature deserved something a little bolder and edgier than a basic biopic framework starring Ashton Kutcher.
Directed by Joshua Michael Stern, Jobs is set for an August 16th release.
