If there are two things Martin Scorsese loves to make, it’s films featuring a fourth wall-breaking protagonist whose narrative arc is of the ‘meteoric rise and fall’ variety, and films featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. Those two elements seem to collide quite powerfully in the flashy trailer for Scorsese’s newest, The Wolf of Wall Street.
DiCaprio plays real-life stock market wolf Jordan Belfort, who in 1998 was busted for money laundering and fraud that included a “pump and dump” scheme that was responsible for $200 million in investor losses and netted Belfort at least $110 million. Today, after a stint in prison, Belfort is an author and motivational speaker.
The trailer seems far more focused on the ‘meteoric rise’ half of things rather than the ‘fall,’ with DiCaprio gleefully spending on boats, houses, and women. And then Matthew McConaughey shows up with mildly insane hair and a wonky yet hypnotizing scene. All in all, it’s a pretty electrifying Scorsese trailer (one that trades in his affinity for ‘60s and ‘70s rock for a new song by Kanye West).
Costarring Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin, Kyle Chandler, and Jon Favreau, The Wolf of Wall Street is set for a November 15 release date.
