It looks like the Tomb Raider film franchise, like the video game series it is based upon, is set to be rejuvenated with a prequel/reboot. Just this year, the fifth video game in the series, Tomb Raider, was released and it featured a rebooted continuity with a much younger, more vulnerable and desperate Lara Croft, and it now appears that MGM will be taking the same approach.
After two Angelina Jolie-starring films from Paramount, the second of which was so terrible that Paramount more or less gave up on the franchise, GK Films snapped up the rights to the film franchise, who in turn brought Tomb Raider to MGM.
And while there are not many details on the new film’s story beyond the fact that it will be a reboot, we now know that Marti Noxon (a writer and showrunner for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who has also written for Mad Men, as well as the Fright Night reboot) will be penning the screenplay.
No word yet on who will star as Lara Croft, or who will direct the project, or even when the projected release date will be. More on all of this as it develops.
