MAN OF STEEL

Though we’ve had other superhero movies from DC, both successful (The Dark Knight) and not (The Green Lantern), Warner Brothers has been building on the idea that eventually they want to do their own Avengers-style movie with Justice League. But from what screenwriter David Goyer is saying, his Man of Steel is only the first piece of that puzzle.

Talking to Bleeding Cool, Goyer said this:

It is our intention that, in success, this would be the zero issue and from this point onward, possible films could expand into a shared universe. In our world, the Man of Steel world, Zack (Snyder) has gone on record saying that we’re implying there are other superheroes in this world. But I don’t know that they’ve come forward yet. The idea is that Superman is the first one. There might be people helping people, but not in costumes, and that Superman comes forward and announces himself to the world. In him announcing himself, he’s the one that changes things.

Though The Dark Knight Rises set up the possibility for a sequel/in-series reboot as it were, there were still rumors swirling about what would happen when Justice League eventually got made, with both Christian Bale and Joseph Gordon-Levitt mentioned as joining up. But from this perspective, it sounds like they can totally start Batman over for this world, as well as The Green Lantern.

But also, Marvel had an idea that the first Iron Man movie could lead to The Avengers, and so they started planting seeds early until they were sure they could bring everyone together. When Christopher Nolan took on Batman, he may have done some franchise building, but he didn’t seemingly plot to have his Batman interact with other superheroes (in fact, the movies seemed designed to never have Bruce Wayne meet someone like Superman). And after the relative failure of The Green Lantern, Warner Brothers had to rethink their approach to making superhero movies.

Now, now that Warner Brothers, DC and — seemingly — Zack Snyder and David Goyer are working towards a Justice League, they might actually earn it. Man of Steel is due out June 14. Justice League, however, is still a pipe dream.

Do you want an Aquaman movie before a Justice League movie?
