How’s this for a big-screen comedy casting coup—Audrey Plaza, Donald Glover, Bill Hader, Alia Shawkat, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Clark Gregg, Connie Britton, and Rachel Bilson, all in one film. Not bad, right? But then slap them into a really, really, really tired teen comedy premise (a nerdy, graduating high school valedictorian is determined to have sex for the very first time before going off to college) with the mildest of twists (gasp! For once the geeky virgin is a girl!) and you get a trailer that isn’t particularly funny or interesting.
It’s truly bizarre—with a cast this honed in the world of comedy, you’d assume the trailer would offer up more than a random chuckle or two, yet that’s the best that The To Do List manages to come up with in a few minutes.
It’s your basic teen sex comedy premise: a bunch of actors in their mid-20s to 30s play a bunch of sex-obsessed teenagers. The nerdiest of the bunch (Plaza) is a virgin who desperately wants to have sex the summer before college. And since she likes to study, she’ll make her own sexual education course, a “to do” list, get it? Ho hee ho ha ha.
Anyway, let’s get it over with:
Pretty disappointing, given the films acting pedigree, no?
The To Do List was directed by Maggie Carey and is set for July 26 release.
What do you think of the trailer?
