Yesterday, we reported to you that Peter Jackson had offered up the first poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second film in his inexplicably long trilogy adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.  And now, just to up the ante, we’ve got a full teaser trailer.

While this is just the film’s teaser, the emphasis should be on trailer—at two minutes, this clip reveals a lot of plot and new scenes, including the one thing fans have been waiting for…Legolas! (Just kidding, Legolas, no one cares about you doing that squinting “I see everything bit”)  No, really, fans can finally see Smaug, the titular greedy dragon.  Check it out:

Thoughts?  Perhaps the CGI simply isn’t complete, but Smaug looked a little, well, cartoonish to these eyes.  While one doesn’t expect a lot of realism when it comes to cinematic fire-breathing lizards with gold stuck to their bodies, there was something about Smaug coming around the corner at the end of the trailer that just looked a bit silly.  Perhaps it will translate better on the big screen, or to hardcore fans of the franchise.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was directed by Peter Jackson and is set for a December 13th release.

What did you think of the teaser?
